Season 12: Disaster Alert!

The wait is finally over! Season 12 begins today and the first episode is already available for download! In this season, cohosts Chris Blevins and Melanie Perry sit down with experts from across the country to talk all things preparation and readiness.

A few of our experts were affected by the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and as a result, dedicated their lives to developing readiness plans and teaching them to others. Some were members of the military and have incorporated their training and experience into educational programs for readiness and survival, while others personally experienced disaster and they're ready to help others by sharing what they learned. But no matter their background or motivation, all of our guests are passionate about disaster preparation, training, and readiness.

Chris shares about her experience with Hurricane Harvey as the Medical Liaison for Ellis County, TX, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Melanie talks about a tragic workplace shooting that occurred in her Surgical Services Department and shares some of the lessons learned from that event.

At the end of the episode, Chris shares 5 emergency response supplies that she always keeps in her car. As promised, here are the links to those items so you can learn more about them!

  1. Israeli Bandage - this compression bandage is a tactical first-aid device for the stopping blood flow from traumatic hemorrhage wounds in pre-hospital emergency situations. It has a sterile, non-adherent pad that applies pressure to any site, and can be easily wrapped and secured. It can also be used similar to a tourniquet to further constrict blood-flow.

  2. Vented Chest Seal - This is used for the treatment of an open and/or tension pneumothorax potentially caused by a penetrating chest trauma. This seal provides 3-vented channels designed to prevent airflow into the chest cavity during inhalation while allowing air to escape through the vent channels during exhalation.

  3. CAT Tourniquet - This tourniquet allows for one-handed operation and can effectively block blood flow quickly, preventing excessive blood loss and buying time for you or your patient to receive professional medical assistance.

  4. Quick Clot - This gauze is designed for wound packing and bleeding control. It accelerates natural blood clotting and stops bleeding within minutes.

  5. Dermabond - This liquid bandage forms a breathable, protective layer that promotes healing and helps prevent infection by reducing exposure to dirt and germs.
